Chrysler overlord Fiat shows off electric 500 sedan in Washington today
Just as it did in Detroit, Fiat is displaying an electric version of its tiny 500 sedan at the media preview today of the 2010 Washington, D.C., Auto Show even though it apparently has no plans to produce it for sale. Fiat plans to bring the gasoline-powered 500 to the U.S. later this year in its role as the overseer of Chrysler.
Makes sense. The show car, called Elettra, is meant to impress the Capitol Hill policy wonks and other decision-makers who come to the show to see whether automakers are picking up on the need to become more envionmentally friendly.
Unlike some small battery electrics, Fiat was able to retain the back seat in its electric 500. The batteries are hidden beneath the back seat and under the floor. Fiat rates the electric motor in the concept car at 255 horsepower and claims it will dash from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds. Fiat says top speed would be greater than 110 miles per hour and adds it could go up to 100 miles on a single charge.
