Police: First Viper fatality is Chrysler man
April 15th, 2013
by Bill Cawthon

The Michigan State Police (MSP) today released the name of the driver of a 2013 SRT Viper who was killed in a single-car accident yesterday.

Martin Morse, 43, of Howell, Michigan died at the scene from injuries sustained when his red Viper left the highway around 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

The MSP’s preliminary investigation revealed that the driver had turned from W. Highland Rd. (Michigan 59) onto northbound US-23, coming to a full stop and then accelerating under full throttle, when he lost control of his car while merging, traveled across the lanes and left the pavement, entering the median. Morse’s Viper hit the median barrier, and was stopped by the lowest cable, which (despite the appearance in the photo), did not break, and prevented the car from reaching opposing traffic.

The damage to the Viper was so severe that firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to cut open the top of the car to allow medical personnel to recover Mr. Morse’s body.

Early reports indicated the Viper had manufacturer plates. Mr. Morse was a respected manager at Chrysler; one engineer told us, “I knew Marty from my days at Jeep-Truck Engineering, he was an energetic and enthusiastic manager. I also worked next to the Viper lab and knew most of the people involved in the program. Many times on summer Mondays, Vipers would return from weekend jaunts by non-program managers and engineers with damage from the vehicle getting away from them. Vipers are awesome, I still have a smile on my face from driving them, however, they always will succumb to physics.”

This is the first known fatal accident involving the latest-generation Viper.
