Default Supercharged Hemi recall reveals production numbers

Supercharged Hemi recall reveals production numbers

by David Zatz
March 1, 2015

Dodge is recalling 2,211 cars 6.2 Hemi-equipped globally to replace gasoline hose seals that may leak, after a tip from a dealer who found a fuel leak on a car that had not yet been delivered to a customer.

The components had passed the supplier’s leak testing, but were caught by the dealer before delivery. Engineers decided that some seals may have been installed incorrectly.

There have been no injuries, accidents, or complaints, as far as Dodge can tell, but all supercharged 6.2 liter Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger “Hellcats” are recalled — providing the first idea of how many supercharged, 707-horsepower Dodges have been made so far:

• 2,012 in the United States
• 148 in Canada
• 30 in Mexico
• 21 outside the US, Canada, and Mexico

Sources tell us that Dodge is working hard on making more Hellcats, and that the restriction is primarily in the engines — possibly in the supply of the custom-designed superchargers. We were originally told that plans were for a maximum of 5,000 engines per year, spread across two or three vehicles; and many Internet sages claimed that Chrysler would be lucky to sell any of the cars, given their expected prices of $60,000-$70,000. Demand however, has been high.
